The student population in Grand Rapids and throughout Michigan has be steadily declining. Fewer students are enrolling I school each year, and it seem like low birth rates could be to blame. The number of students enrolled in Michigan schools this year is down 51,000 from just five years ago. That also means that the number of students graduating from school’s in Michigan is much higher than the number of students starting school.
The low enrollment numbers could mean less funding for some schools or school districts. There are other factors that could affect enrollment, but it seems that low birth rates could be he most likely culprit.
“We need several years of a stable birth rate for things to flatten out, ” said Kathryn Summers, associate director of the Michigan Senate Fiscal Agency.
