A reef has been built on Lake Michigan in order to help protect the eggs of Lake Herring and to encourage them to spawn.

“Historically, lake herring were the largest commercial catch in the Great Lakes and played a key role in sustaining populations of apex predators like lake trout,” said Matt Herbert, an aquatic ecologist who spearheaded the project. “But overfishing, degraded habitat and aquatic invasive species caused their numbers to plummet in the late 1950s,” he said. “Today, only a few remnant populations remain.”
