The benefits of sedation dentistry

If the thought of a dental visit makes you nervous – you aren’t alone! According to the American Dental Association, over 100 million Americans experience some form of fear or anxiety about going to the dentist. Feeling uneasy over an upcoming visit is normal, but that feeling can be reduced. Dr. Mulder is certified in sedation dentistry and he can provide you with a dental experience that is relaxed, comfortable, and pain-free.

What is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry is a safe and effective way to help you get through dental appointments with ease. Sedation is a process that establishes a relaxed and calm state through the use of sedatives. Dr. Mulder’s office uses oral sedatives and practices conscious sedation – which means that you remain awake for the appointment (able to respond to requests from Dr. Mulder) but in a deeply relaxed state.

Who Benefits?

Dr. Mulder can help determine if you are a candidate for sedation. Sedation dentistry is a good option for anyone experiencing strong dental anxiety. It also benefits patients needing lengthy procedures such as full-mouth reconstruction, TMJ neuromuscular rehabilitation, cosmetic veneers, and anyone more comfortable having multiple procedures completed in one appointment.

Sedation dentistry is not a cure for anxiety, but rather a temporary solution that allows work to be completed quickly, and with greater ease. Though after a few, worry-free visits, many people do find that they experience less dental anxiety overall.

How Does it Work?

You will be given Valium the night before your visit and an additional sedative pill to take at your appointment. Once the sedation kicks-in, you will begin to feel at ease, and relaxed in the chair. You will remain in a comfortable, conscious sedation for the duration of your appointment. Dr. Mulder and his team will complete their pain-free dental treatments.

Sedation dentistry is much like short-term amnesia. When you wake, you may not remember much of your appointment. It is important to have a family member or friend drive you home at the end of your appointment, as those under sedation are not allowed to operate a car.
