The John Ball Zoo recently released the sad new that their 100-lb capybara name Jersey has cancer. A capybara is a large rodent that resembles a guinea pig. Jersey is currently recovering from a surgery that attempted to remove the tumor in her leg. It was unsuccessful in removing the full tumor so in a few weeks she will undergo another procedure where chemotherapy beads will be placed in her body to help kill the tumor.
“Amputation is not really the greatest option (for a capybara),” said Ryan Colburn, a zoo veterinarian who’s teaming with doctors from Blue Pearl Veterinary Partners to treat Jersey. “We’re hopeful that the prognosis will be good.”
