The holidays are here and that means you are going to be faced with the decision to dive into those yummy treat around your home or office or stare at them all day and wish you could eat them. Many people are concerned about eating holiday foods and treats and gaining weight, but a bigger concern should be your teeth. Many holidays treats are sweet and full of sugar and that means they could be harming your teeth. So how do you enjoy the holidays while also protecting your teeth?

Choose Your Treats Wisely

Some treats have more sugar than others. When you are at the buffet or choosing from a cookie platter, make sure you consider the treats with the most sugar and try to opt for something a little more healthy.  You can still enjoy a cookie or a piece of cake, but choosing one with less sugar could help you avoid a cavity.

Everything In Moderation

One or two cookies won’t hurt you this holiday season but if you indulge on chocolates, candy canes, cookies, cakes, and other sweets over the next few months, you could be wreaking havoc on your teeth. Make sure you are enjoying these holiday treats in moderation so you don’t have to deal with a bunch of cavities after the new year.

Good Oral Hygiene

Even if you already practice good oral hygiene, you may need to turn it up this holiday season. Don’t be afraid to keep a toothbrush or floss in your desk drawer or handbag. After you eat a few treats, run to the restroom for a quick brush and floss you won’t have to worry about how the sugar is affecting your teeth until you can get home to take care of them.

If you are going to be eating a lot of junk food and holiday treats this season, make sure you know that you are putting your teeth at risk for cavities. You can still enjoy your favorite desserts and treats, just do so wisely.
