Finding out that you have to have a tooth extracted can be a scary. Not everyone is fond of having a piece of their body removed and many are afraid that it may be painful. There can be some pain associated with tooth extraction, but most dentists will provide anesthesia to help reduce the pain and discomfort. In most cases, the patient is already in pain from the tooth that needs to be removed, and doesn’t notice the pain of the extraction.
At one point in time, tooth extractions were done without anesthesia. Now a simple shot or a little bit of nitrous oxide can block pain receptors and allow your dentist to remove your tooth without pain. If you have had a tooth removed and are experiencing a lot of pain after the procedure, there could be another issue that your dentist should know about.
