Not everyone agrees with the need for sedation in dentistry, but many dentists say it is beneficial and necessary. Sedation is often used when a procedure will be extensive or otherwise painful, but many dentists will also sedate children before performing a dental procedure to help make them more comfortable and to keep them still and easier to work with.
People who have a fear of the dentist can also be sedated. Dentists say that many adults are afraid of dental procedures and often avoid dental work because of this fear. By offering sedation to these people, dentists can convince them to get the dental work they need and make the experience much less frightening. This also means they are more likely to return for dental work in the future.
