Tooth loss is something that most people related to aging. While it can be a major inconvenience, many elderly people think nothing of getting dentures to improve their appearance and make it easier for them to eat. Aside from cosmetic issues, a recent study found that tooth loss is also linked to mental and physical decline in the elderly. The study showed that people who had lost all or most of their natural teeth were performed 10% worse in physical and mental performance tests.

Gum disease is the most common cause of tooth decay and affects those at poverty level the most. Tooth loss has declined in the United States during the last 50 years, but is still common. It is estimated that 50% of the adult population suffers from gum disease and could lose their natural teeth as a result.
