TMJ FAQ
Treating Grand Rapids, Muskegon, Holland, Michigan And Surrounding Areas
How do I know if my symptoms are caused by stress or TMJ?
You don’t! Only a qualified dentist can rule out TMJ as the culprit. TMJ symptoms can mimic signs of stress, and can be worsened by added stress. However, TMJ symptoms tend to be more frequent and severe than stress indicators. Schedule your TMJ consultation with Dr. Mulder today.
What if my current dentist does not offer neuromuscular dentistry?
Find a neuromuscular dentist in the Grand Rapids area that is able to diagnose and treat TMJ. You cannot hope for a solution to your pain unless you find a dentist who can first properly identify the source of your pain. Dr. Mulder is trained in TMJ and neuromuscular dentistry, and is skilled in finding which treatment is best for you. Neuromuscular dentists have undergone extensive training and have the diagnostic equipment needed for a thorough evaluation.
Will an oral appliance or bite guard relieve my pain?
The TENS treatment is used to help diagnose chronically strained muscles. The oral appliance, or splint, will be used afterwards, when the TENS information has allowed Dr. Mulder to design the right kind of splint for you. The purpose of the splint is to retrain the jaw to its new position, that is, to retrain the chewing muscles to the new bite.
What happens if TMJ is left untreated?
Depending on the severity of your jaw misalignment, TMJ may lead to increased pain, more frequent headaches, and unbearable tension. TMJ symptoms can affect your daily life, preventing you from doing a variety of activities, and breaking your concentration. Undiagnosed TMJ is not only painful, but can lead to tooth loss, bone damage, and muscle atrophy.
